February 2027 Bar Exam Study Schedule: A 10 Week Plan

Short answer: NCBE lists February 24, 2027 as the MBE test date (NCBE MBE) and February 23 and 24, 2027 for the NextGen bar exam in jurisdictions that give it (NCBE NextGen). If you want the full 10 weeks, a suggested start date is Wednesday, December 16, 2026. That is our own count back from February 24, 2027, not an NCBE date; if your exam starts February 23, count back from that day instead. The schedule below runs in weeks before your exam date, so it works whichever exam you sit. Confirm your exact dates, exam type, and filing deadlines with your jurisdiction and with NCBE before you plan around them.

First, confirm which exam you are taking

Between July 2026 and July 2028, most jurisdictions are moving from the MBE, MEE, and MPT to the NextGen bar exam (NCBE MBE). That means February 2027 takers are not all sitting the same test.

  • NextGen. NCBE lists Connecticut, Guam, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, the Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Palau, the Virgin Islands, and Washington as jurisdictions that first administered the NextGen bar exam in July 2026 (NCBE NextGen). In Washington, the July 2026 NextGen exam was canceled for most applicants after a venue technology failure, and a NextGen make up exam was held September 1 and 2, 2026 (NCBE, WSBA). If you sit in one of these, confirm with your board which exam you take in February 2027.
  • Current exam with the MBE. NCBE lists Florida, California, and New York among the jurisdictions that first administer NextGen in July 2028, and lists all three as administering the MBE (NCBE NextGen, NCBE MBE). Confirm your February 2027 format with your board.
  • Everyone else: check your board of bar examiners. Our state by state pages and fees and deadlines tracker link to sources from each board.

If you are sitting NextGen, the format is different. Read the NextGen format guide before you build your plan.

What the MBE looks like on test day

If your exam includes the MBE, plan practice around its real shape. NCBE describes it as 200 multiple choice questions: 175 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions that look the same as scored ones. It runs in a morning and an afternoon session of three hours each, 100 questions per session, with no scheduled breaks during either session (NCBE). The 175 scored questions are spread evenly, 25 from each of seven subjects, and points are not subtracted for wrong answers (NCBE).

Two practical takeaways: build up to sitting through a full three hour block, and answer every question.

A 10 week February 2027 study schedule

Use this as a frame and adjust it to your main course. If you start later, compress the middle phase, not the first week or the last two.

Weeks 10 and 9: baseline and plan

  • Confirm your exam type, test dates, and filing deadlines with your board.
  • Take a short baseline diagnostic across all seven MBE subjects. Log every miss by subject and reason.
  • Map your main course calendar. Mark which subjects it covers each week.
  • Pick your first weak area and set a daily practice time you can keep.

Weeks 8 to 5: rules plus daily mixed practice

  • Follow your main course for rule learning.
  • Every day, do a short mixed set plus a few questions on your current weak area.
  • Rematch your misses within a day or two. Miss a question, learn the trap, rematch the rule.
  • Once a week, rerun a short mixed check and update your weak area list.
  • Start your written practice for your jurisdiction (essays and performance tests) on a weekly rhythm. Florida takers can use the essay playbooks and attack outlines.

Weeks 4 and 3: timed practice

  • Add timed sets. Work up to a full 100 question block in three hours to match one MBE session (NCBE).
  • Review every timed set by reason missed, not only by score.
  • Keep daily weak area work going; do not drop it for timed sets alone.
  • Write full timed essays and at least one full performance test if your exam has them.

Weeks 2 and 1: targeted review and rest

  • Shift toward your remaining weak areas and the rules you still rematch often. The one pagers and most tested topics help with quick review.
  • Keep sessions shorter. Stop adding new material in the final days.
  • Confirm logistics with your board: admission ticket, ID rules, laptop requirements, and test center details.
  • Sleep. Protect the two nights before the exam.

Make the daily part easy to keep

Most schedules fail in the middle weeks, when motivation dips. Short daily sessions you can do on a busy day are easier to sustain than long sessions you keep postponing. Track whether your weak area is shrinking each week, not only your overall percentage.

Florida and California takers

If you sit in Florida or California in February 2027, plan for state specific subjects alongside the MBE. The Florida and California pages list tested subjects, fees, and deadlines with links to board sources, and the state specific subjects map compares jurisdictions.
